How to Set Up a CloudPanel Custom Domain on an EC2 Instance

In the previous tutorial, we have installed cloudpanel on an EC2 instance on Ubuntu 24.04. And to access cloudpanel, we use the IP address and not the domain name, as follows:

That’s not a best practice, because we use untrusted SSL/TLS over HTTPS (self-signed certificates), which means the certificates are not verified by external parties. certificate authorities, and this will increase security risks.

Best practice is to use a domain name for the cloudpanel URL, and use trusted SSL/TLS. And here, we’re going to cover this.

CloudPanel Custom Domains

Cloudpanel already has a custom domain configuration, so we just need to place the URL in it.

• Login to cloudpanel using IP address:8443
• In the top right corner, Click Admin Area

• In the left menu, click Settings, this will open the cloudpanel custom domain page in the General tab, enter your domain for cloudpanel.
• Click Save. Cloudpanel will add a Let’s Encrypt SSL/TLS trusted certificate.

Note: 
Be sure, your domain has already pointed to cloudpanel IP address with A record type. If not so, open your DNS management on that domain, add A record with subdomain and cloudpanel IP address.

This takes several minutes to hours for DNS propagation.

DNS propagation, you can check whether the domain is successfully redirected to the cloudpanel IP at dnschecker.org

Once the domain points to the cloudpanel IP address, you can test open it:

Note: You no longer need to enter port 8443, just enter your domain.

Now uses HTTPS with Let’s Encrypt. If you click the small icon next to the URL, the connection is now secure and the certificate is valid (trusted).
